Josh Goes to Athens

The Cassini Project Science Group meeting was held near Athens, Greece, this month. After the meeting I had a little time to do some sightseeing in Athens. We also took an evening tour to Cape Sounion, site of Poseidon’s temple.

There are an estimated 100,000 stray dogs in Athens. Many hang around the Acropolis, perhaps because of the density of cafes catering to tourists and the accompanying possibilities of scraps. All the ones I encountered were either friendly or indifferent to people. We were adopted by one cheerful dog one evening who followed us a great distance down the Acropolis and into town until we came to a busy street she was (wisely) unwilling to cross. Unfortunately we had nothing to offer her in return for her company. This stray, like many I saw, sports a collar.
