After a great dinner at John and Carla’s we had our now annual Dictionary Game routine (see here for last year). Here are some highlights:

Hendiadys:
Jewelry for a chicken (Josh)

An alphabet adapted from hieroglyphics (Carla)
Figure of speech in which an idea is expressed by two words connected by “and” (real definition)

Hilch:
A little hill in Wales (Anne-Marie)
A common drink in the middle ages made from fish milk, oysters and the root of the oak tree (Atticus)
The middle part of shilchy (Aylia)
To limp (Carla, whom I think had the dictionary, though an online search now says it means to lift)

Decussate:
What a bear does in the woods (Atticus)
The condition of being without teeth (Brad)
A long bench from Roman times which would seat 10 Centurians (Carl)
A 10-line religious mantra (John)
To cross in the form of an X (the real definition)
